Care Guide: Ceramic Glass TopsUpdated an hour ago

Caring for your ceramic glass table top

Ceramic glass table tops combine the elegant appearance of ceramic tile or natural stone with a highly practical, non-porous surface. They are heat-resistant, easy to clean, and durable in outdoor conditions. With simple routine care they will retain their appearance for many years.

Understanding ceramic glass

Ceramic glass is a glass-ceramic composite material that undergoes a controlled crystallisation process during manufacture, giving it exceptional thermal resistance and hardness. The surface is non-porous — meaning liquids and spills sit on the surface rather than being absorbed — making it hygienic and very easy to clean. The appearance can replicate natural stone, marble, or tile finishes to a high degree of realism.

Ceramic glass is resistant to UV fading and performs well in cold temperatures, making it a practical choice for outdoor use year-round. However, like all glass-ceramic materials, it is hard but relatively brittle — it is highly resistant to everyday surface impacts but can chip at the edges if subjected to a sharp concentrated blow.

Routine cleaning

For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface down with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water marks and maintain the surface appearance. Because the surface is non-porous, most spills can simply be wiped away without any residue being left behind — prompt cleaning is still recommended to prevent any staining from coloured liquids such as red wine or coffee.

Important: Do not use abrasive cloths, scourers, or abrasive cleaning products on ceramic glass. These will scratch and dull the surface finish, and the damage cannot be reversed. Use soft cloths only.

Stubborn marks and staining

For dried-on food, coffee rings, or similar surface marks, a non-abrasive ceramic or glass cooker-top cleaner is ideal. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and work in gentle circular motions. The cleaner will lift the mark without scratching the surface. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft cloth afterwards.

For mineral deposits or limescale from standing water, a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water applied with a soft cloth is effective. Leave for a few minutes, then wipe clean and rinse. Do not use undiluted acidic cleaners or limescale removers — see the section below on what to avoid.

Heat resistance

Ceramic glass is inherently heat-resistant and will withstand the warmth of plates and dishes placed directly on the surface in normal use. However, we still recommend using trivets or heat mats when placing very hot items — such as a hot serving dish straight from the oven or a barbecue grill pan — on the surface. Sudden, very localised extreme heat can in rare cases cause thermal shock, particularly on older surfaces that may have existing micro-hairline marks.

UV and frost resistance

Ceramic glass table tops are resistant to UV fading and are durable in cold temperatures. They do not require any seasonal sealing or treatment to maintain their appearance. Covering the table during winter months is still advisable to protect against prolonged frost, ice, and wind-blown debris, and to reduce the cleaning required at the start of the next season.

Using placemats and coasters

We always recommend using placemats and coasters on ceramic glass table tops. While the surface is hardwearing, coasters protect against heat marks, condensation rings, and fine scratches from the bases of ceramics and metal cutlery. Remove placemats and coasters when the table is not in use to prevent any marks from moisture or debris trapped underneath.

Handling and safety

When cleaning or repositioning a ceramic glass table top, use both hands and keep the panel as flat and stable as possible. Avoid knocking the edges against hard surfaces — the edges are the most vulnerable point on any glass-ceramic panel. Do not apply sharp, concentrated pressure to the edge of the surface.

Important: If a ceramic glass top becomes chipped or cracked, stop using the table immediately. A chipped or cracked surface is significantly weakened and can shatter unexpectedly. Contact our customer care team for replacement options for your specific table.

What to avoid

Don't use abrasive cloths, scourers, or abrasive cleaning products
Don't use undiluted acidic cleaners, limescale removers, or bleach
Don't drag hard or sharp objects across the surface
Don't knock or impact the edges — the most vulnerable point
Don't continue using a chipped or cracked top — replace immediately
Don't place extremely hot cookware directly on the surface without a trivet

Seasonal maintenance checklist

Work through this at the start of each season to keep your ceramic glass table top in top condition.

  • Clean the surface with warm soapy water and dry with a soft lint-free cloth
  • Treat any limescale, mineral deposits, or stubborn marks with white vinegar solution or ceramic cleaner
  • Inspect the surface and edges carefully for any chips, cracks, or damage — replace if any are found
  • Check that the table top sits securely on its frame supports with no rocking or movement
  • Ensure trivets, heat mats, placemats, and coasters are to hand for the season ahead
