Care Guide: Rattan Garden FurnitureUpdated 3 hours ago

Caring for your rattan garden furniture

Our rattan garden furniture is constructed from a synthetic PE (polyethylene) rattan weave over a powder-coated aluminium frame. Unlike natural rattan, synthetic PE rattan is specifically engineered for outdoor use — it is UV-stabilised, weather-resistant, and will not absorb moisture or rot. With regular care it will continue to look great season after season.

Understanding your rattan weave

Synthetic PE rattan naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature. In cooler weather the weave may feel slightly stiffer; in warm conditions it will relax a little. Minor variation in the tension and shape of the weave through the seasons is completely normal and is not a defect — it is simply the material responding to its environment as it is designed to do.

Similarly, the weave on different pieces within the same set may vary slightly in shade or texture. This is a natural characteristic of synthetic rattan and is not a manufacturing fault.

Please note: UV fading and weave brittleness caused by prolonged weather exposure are considered normal wear and tear and are not covered under guarantee. Using furniture covers consistently when the furniture is not in use is the most effective way to extend the life and colour vibrancy of the weave.

Routine cleaning

At the start of each season, the most effective way to clean rattan furniture is with a garden hose and a soft sponge or brush. This will quickly clear any dust, pollen, and debris that has accumulated over winter. For a more thorough clean, use a mild soapy water solution and work the sponge or soft brush into the weave to loosen any embedded dirt. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and allow to dry fully in the open air before use or covering.

For a quick clean during the season, wipe down with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed.

Important: Do not use a pressure washer on rattan furniture at close range. High pressure can force water into the weave and frame joints, and can cause the weave to separate from the frame over time. Use a garden hose on a gentle setting only.

Dealing with stains

For food or drink spills, blot immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth to remove as much liquid as possible before it dries. Once blotted, clean the area with warm soapy water and a soft brush working into the weave. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. For more stubborn staining, a mild upholstery cleaner suitable for synthetic materials can be used — always test on a small, inconspicuous area first.

The aluminium frame

The powder-coated aluminium frame beneath the rattan weave is extremely durable and rust-resistant. As part of your routine cleaning, wipe down any exposed frame sections with a damp cloth and mild soap. Rinse and dry after cleaning. At the start of each season, inspect all joints and fixings and tighten any that have worked loose. We do not recommend using power tools on fixings as over-tightening can damage the frame or strip threads and may void your warranty.

Please note: Although the aluminium frame itself will not rust, connecting screws and bolts may occasionally be made from other metals. Check these at the start of each season and treat any surface rust promptly with a rust remover before it has a chance to spread.

UV exposure and fading

PE rattan is UV-stabilised, but prolonged direct sun exposure over many seasons will gradually cause the colour of the weave to fade and, over time, may cause it to become more brittle. Positioning furniture in partial shade where possible, using a parasol during the hottest part of the day, and covering the furniture when not in use will all significantly slow this process.

Furniture covers

Cover rattan furniture with breathable, air-vented furniture covers whenever it is not in regular use — including overnight during summer. Breathable covers allow air to circulate while protecting against rain, dew, pollen, UV, and bird droppings. Avoid PVC-backed or non-breathable covers, which can trap moisture against the weave and frame and encourage mould growth. Always ensure furniture is clean and dry before fitting covers.

Mould and mildew on the weave

If mould or mildew develops on the rattan weave — most likely if the furniture has been stored or covered while damp — clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, working thoroughly into the weave. Rinse well and allow to dry fully in open air. For persistent mould, a solution of white vinegar and water applied with a soft brush is effective on synthetic rattan — rinse thoroughly afterwards. Once clean and fully dry, ensure the furniture is covered with a breathable cover to prevent recurrence.

Winter storage

Rattan furniture can be left outdoors year-round, but storing it in a garage or shed over winter is the best way to preserve the weave for longer. If storing outdoors, clean thoroughly, allow to dry completely, and fit well-secured breathable furniture covers. Remove and store all cushions indoors — never leave cushions under a cover over winter.

Important: Never put rattan furniture away dirty or damp. Even a small amount of moisture trapped beneath a cover over winter can lead to mould developing in the weave, which is difficult to remove fully.

What to avoid

Don't pressure wash — use a garden hose on a gentle setting only
Don't use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners on the weave
Don't cover or store while dirty or damp
Don't use non-breathable or PVC-backed covers
Don't leave in prolonged direct sunlight without protection
Don't use power tools on fixings — tighten by hand only

Seasonal maintenance checklist

Work through this at the start of each season to keep your rattan furniture in top condition.

  • Hose down the weave and clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly
  • Allow to dry fully in the open air before use or covering
  • Inspect the weave for any signs of UV fading, brittleness, or mould
  • Wipe down all exposed frame sections with a damp cloth and mild soap
  • Check and tighten all frame fixings and joints by hand
  • Inspect fixings for any surface rust and treat promptly if found
  • Check furniture covers for damage and replace if they no longer offer full protection
  • Bring out cushions from storage and check for mould, odour, or damage before use
